A backyard discovery turned self-ready product

When R&D introduced the isopod habitat, the first question was simple: what exactly is an isopod? The answer—better known as the familiar roly-poly—set the stage for the project. The challenge became transforming a common backyard discovery into an enticing, shelf-ready product.

The design needed to capture the charm of a tiny, self-contained world while creating a big visual impact at retail. It had to feel accessible for kids, yet credible for dedicated hobbyists, all while aligning seamlessly with the existing Creatures product line.

And perhaps the most unexpectedly complex detail of all was settling on the “correct” spelling of roly-poly.

A simple package with a big impact

A single corrugate wrap encircles the habitat, minimizing packaging costs while allowing the internal components to remain visible from the sides. This streamlined solution was designed to communicate the product at a glance—clearly outlining included components while showcasing a variety of isopod varieties that could be housed within the kit.

The interior of the wrap carries a more in-depth purpose, featuring a robust educational component with step-by-step instructions that are revealed as the package is opened.

Lastly, a species specific logo was designed and added to the package making Roly-Polies part of the brand family.

Additional Kit Components

The kit was rounded out with a Mini Care Guide brochure and poster, as well as packaging for the Isopod Banquet Blocks and food sample pack, integrating seamlessly with existing components from the Creatures product line.
